IT World Enterprise Networking newsletter puts the spotlight on
systemhound:
ENTERPRISE NETWORKING --- 05/20/2004
James Gaskin You may have heard one of your executives with an MBA proclaim
"you can't manage what you can't measure." If you have trouble
getting budget approval for desktop inventory and software distribution
tools, enlist that exec for your budget request. Advertisement On this
topic
A variety of companies make software tools to a) inventory the hardware and
software of all your desktops and/or b) roll software out to said desktops.
But Systemhound from Software Innovation (http://www.systemhound.com) adds
two interesting twists in their product.
First, as all good products today, Systemhound is Web based. You provide a
server with Microsoft's IIS (Internet Information Server) and it will build
all the reporting and administration interfaces for you. I recommend
keeping this as an internal-only application (it's not Systemhound I'm
worried about).
Second, they are ready to sell and support their software across every
continent where you're likely to have offices. They price their product in
US Dollars, Pounds, Euros, and Australian Dollars (I guess you Canadians
are out of luck, but since Software Innovation is British, I bet they'd
help you).
Pricing starts at $5 US Dollars per license and comes in 75 user packs
(it's definitely for the medium to large business). That's a fair price,
and one that should get under your "measure to manage"
executive's pain threshold.
The "measure" part of the product is obvious, but may not get
funded even when you pin down the executive. However, the recent news will
help your budget process once again if you leverage it correctly.
How much is it worth to your management to list every spyware application
resident on your desktop systems? How about virus executables? Getting a
complete list of every file on your desktops, then sorting by name, will
pop those malware parasites up far enough even executives can't ignore
them. And Systemhound will update the listings automatically and
constantly.
If you don't have inventory software, check this out. If you do, get
proactive and start showing executives the summary reports for security
concerns, such as un-patched desktops, on a regular basis.
Be sure to arrange the reports into pie charts. Execs love color pie
charts.
